Osmosis
'Osmosis',began life as a drawing for a Valentines day show at Mosaic gallery, before it was reworked in oils in 2011, and showcased at the Alternative Cafe No Brow exhibit the same year.
Currently, you can see it, along with a number of other works-including those from the Man/son series, at the Ruby Room here in San Diego until January 31st.
It's also available as signed prints:

Ghost of Medusa at Haeyna
This painting is from 2010,a metaphorical Fin de siècle for everything I'd done up until that point, and I debuted it once at my featured show at Alternative Cafe that same year.
Which is why I am delighted to announce that it will be part of the ongoing collection at L.A's Hyaena Gallery-fast becoming one of my favorite venues in the city, showcasing as it does the work of some stellar contemporaries and an etching by one Albrecht Durer.
I am honored to be in such company.

New Brow contemporary underground art

A reminder that the New Brow IV show is occurring at the Alternative Cafe this evening. Unfortunately, the costly logistics of getting up there, mean I shalln't be in attendance , but in my absence, I've sent three of my pieces to keep you company.

And finally, my daughter-Emma- just got her first write up for a recent showcase in a local Liverpool inkie called Object of Dreams on page 6 of the Like it / Love it section.
This is wonderful news and I am so proud of her for all her hard work paying off.
Well done Emma.x

New Brow IV at the Alternative Cafe gallery, with David Van Gough

Packaged and shipped the three pieces for the New Brow IV show in Monterrey this week, which knocked me back over a hundred nicker.
It'll be worth it though, with such luminaries as Chris Mars, Eric Joyner, Buddy Nestor et al, my work shall be in amongst some stellar company.
No fear of this one being publicized then, I even saw my name taking equal space on an ad in Juxtapoz.
Sadly, the logistics of making the nine hour trek there this time around, mean we are unable to attend.
Sorry we are bummed about it too.
Still, anyone in the vicinity that night will still be in for an evening of grand guignol.
Let the work speak for itself.
Show opens May 13th, 6pm to 12pm at The Alternative Cafe gallery.

Osmosis-new painting by David Van Gough

'Osmosis'
Oil on Canvas24" x 36"
I couldn't tell you who said a painting is never finished, merely abandoned.
Certainly I could have tinkered with this piece for weeks. In the end, that old warhorse of time was my enemy, but having labored four twelve hour days in a row, the end result can hardly said to be rushed, or hopefully any the less for having stepped away now.
I think its a vast improvement on my original drawing at any rate.
It shall be one of three pieces I am showing on May 13th at Alternative Cafe for the New Brow IV show.

The Alternative Cafe gallery-Twilight Journeys with David Van Gough

If the endless, rolling sun baked plains and hills seemed like grandiose distraction from the mundanity of eight hours on the road, then I suppose Fridays show at Alternative Cafe, was something of a subdued affair by comparison.
I'm forever grateful of the people who do make opening nights what they are,and this time around the trickle gave me ample opportunity to walk attendees through each piece at my leisure-something the short shrift of a deluge doesn't.
So my undimmed thanks to you all, gallery owner Scott for a grand showcase, the wonderfully imaginative decal border lining the walls, the patrons who hang on every syllable, the dogs and children who kept us entertained and barista's who kept my whistle wet throughout.

Notes from an Easel. Box Office

Spent a large body of the day preparing the body of work for the Alternative Cafe show.
It's the largest collection I've put together for a show thus far, and shipping it to the Moon would have been no less arduous.
So collection 1 is in transit, collection 2 is in transition, since I am still making additions.

Is this the same with every artist I wonder?
And still, the coffers need filling, so I managed to knock this out for breakfast yesterday. Its a rather nice piece of Pop Surrealism, which uses some common religious motifs to denote the origin of evil.

Head Candy-Bill Bixby goes to Monterey

I've never thrown a party before, less hosted one, and hadn't anticipated the mountain of organization involved one iota, less the whole yard looks like it might as well be on Mars factor.
All told, judging from the merry throng and the lateness of the hour, I believe it was a success.
So first day back at the Art thing, should have been a cinch, except I discovered that The Alternative Cafe gig isn't in LA, but Monterey.
I'm not kidding.
Geography, was never a strong point at school.
Some quick thinking and a swift rejig made the shipping option a lot less lofty (by over a hundred nicker), but I'm afraid that I've had to supplement the monster that is 'The Valley'.
Thematically it works much better for the cannon of 12 pieces for Alternative Cafe, but my intended vision for The Hive shall definitely miss 'Triumvirate'-the piece I traded it for.
To that end, I've started a reprise of that work, but with the difference that I am approaching it more as a somber lament, rather than with the stark rawness of its former incarnation.
Sunday is final delivery date.
I swear I am Bill Bixby from the show-The Magician, pulling all kinds of rabbits out of hats.
Here's not a rabbit, but my pinhead cat Ronin, magically appearing on my head.

Something for the weekend part one
After ten wonderfully hectic days, traveling up and down the coast to enjoy the best sights and company, that California has to offer, my daughter-Emma and her boyfriend, sadly returned to the UK yesterday.
A great time was had by all, and I'll be adding a selection of pics to my Flickr account, as soon as the moment presents itself. In the meantime, there is much to catch up on, starting with my weekly roundup of forthcoming events-Eyes down.
The Hive Show September
1. Whilst we had company, I was delighted to attend this months Hive showing, and proudly introduce my little girl to the work on display,which-alongside the cream of pop surreal bazaar-was a daubing by her old man.

The show runs until September 26th-729 S.Spring St, CA 90014, LA.
The Hive Show October-Tarot Group Show
2. Next months Hive showing will be a Tarot themed show, and will include a selection of the deck, by all of the artists involved. I missed the boat on picking the minor arcana card I wanted, opting instead for the seven of swords. The card itself is fairly innocuous visually, so instead I'll be working from the premise of a few of the keywords pertaining to the cards meaning, such as irrational, duplicity, instability and juxtaposition.

Looking Forward-The Alternative Cafe-October 2010
3.Alongside the featured Hive showing in October 2010, I received confirmation that I shall be a featured artist at The Alternative Cafe later that same month. The gallery is one of California's most prestigious Art hot spots, and regularly advertised in Juxtapoz magazine, so it is a great honor to be showing there.Currently exhibiting for instance, are works by the eminent Eric Joyner, and Gabe Leonard.

Losing my head over a Virtual Show.
4.Having mentioned in a previous post that my work is to be included in the 'Dark Vomit' video game project, and I can now reveal some of the first screen caps, portraying the dungeon room that my art is on display. I'm delighted with the results, and will post further details as they come.

I'll make a second posting shortly.
